Anti Gravity Yoga a.k.a Aerial Yoga - Have you tried it?

Have you heard about the Anti Gravity Yoga or Aerial Yoga that is making the news since 2009? Well, if you haven't, you need to check it out. Anti gravity or Aerial Yoga is basically doing yoga without touching the floor. Basically, for traditional yoga classes, you need to at least get ready your yoga mat to do your yoga postures. However, for anti gravity or aerial yoga, you replace the yoga mat with a Yoga Hammock.

I was amazed when I read about this in Yahoo News and therefore, I decided to find out more about it. This led me to antigravityyoga.com. This site basically has all the info you need to know about anti gravity or aerial yoga.

According to me, the concept seems quite scary to me as I am slightly afraid of heights and also, I am not very comfortsble letting the hammock hold my weight (which I am trying very hard to lose) without any form of "other" support. What happens if that hammock snaps! Okay, maybe I am being a little too skeptic but you really need to let yourself go if you want to reap any form of benefit from joining a anti gravity or aerial yoga classes.

Benefits? What are the benefits of doing anti gravity or aerial yoga instead of traditional yoga?

Well, the main benefit I can see is that it allows a person having difficulty doing head stands a lot of ease with which they could do that pose. It is easier to flip yourself upside down than walk up that wall (I tried that a lot of times but never worked). Headstand is very beneficial as it helps the blood flow to your brain and supplies it with an extra dose of oxygen which otherwise does not travel that far up your body. Your thoughts will clear up and you will also start feeling more active as your brain is more active when it receives a lot of oxygen.

The other benefits of doing aerial yoga or anti gravity yoga are as follows:
- less strenuous as your body is not pressing against the floor (it may be hard till you start feeling comfortable with the hammock)
- you will feel more free (I feel very relaxed and free after swinging in the park. I guess this will give that kind of benefit if not more)
- Your fear of heights will disapper (that is, if you manage to stay in class despite your fear)

If you have tried anti gravit yoga or arial yoga, please drop your comments. I would love to hear from someone who has tried this before. Thanks.
